In ancient and medieval science, aether, also known as the fifth element, is the material that exists beyond the terrestrial sphere. Used in several theories to refer to the propagation of light and gravity- it essentially refers to the unknowable beyond the earth’s surface. The Aetherscape series is set within this context of questioning that which is real, that which is speculative, and that which exists beyond the edges of what we know. Using iridescence and scale shifts as strategies to investigate the complexities impermanence, this work forms a relational vocabulary in which the edges remain intentionally blurry. Existing in a state that is viscerally recognizable as landscape, yet strangely unlocatable as place, we experience (and construct) the unknowable anew.
